Wendy Lower is a Professor of History holding the John K. Roth Chair and George R. Roberts Fellow. Her research focuses on Holocaust history, genocide, and Eastern European studies. She has affiliations with institutions including the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum (as Project Director for German Witnesses to War) and Ludwig Maximilians Universität München. She lectures globally, including at the University of Glasgow and University of Texas at Dallas.
Education: B.A. (1987) Hamilton College and Ph.D. (1999) American University. Awards include the Baker Burton Award (2007) and National Book Award finalist (2013). Her research has been supported by grants from the German Historical Institute, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, and others.
Key research interests include Nazi-era crimes in Ukraine, women’s roles in Nazi killing fields, and memorialization of the Shoah. She co-edits journals like the Journal of Genocide Research and has authored seminal books such as Nazi Empire-Building and the Holocaust in Ukraine (2005) and Hitler’s Furies (2013).
