Wei Liu, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor and Research Director of Rehabilitation, Integrative and Complementary Health (RICH) at VCOM, Auburn, where he leads research in biomechanics and physical therapy. He holds a Doctorate in Physical Rehabilitation Science from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and has held academic roles at the University of South Alabama and Walsh University.
- Ph.D. in Physical Rehabilitation Science, University of Maryland (2009)
- M.S. in Biomedical Engineering, University of Vermont (2003)
- B.S. in Kinesiology (Biomechanics), Beijing University of Physical Education (2000)
Dr. Liu specializes in biomechanics, focusing on Tai Chi as an intervention for knee osteoarthritis and fall prevention in older adults. His work explores dynamic stability, joint loading mechanisms, and muscle activation patterns during Tai Chi movements. He also investigates stroke rehabilitation, particularly compensatory arm reaching strategies and multi-joint coordination.
Recent research trends highlight his contributions to wearable sensor development for knee laxity assessment, ACL reconstruction techniques, and flexible electronics reliability in motion-attached applications. His 15 most recent publications reflect a consistent focus on biomechanical modeling, clinical translation, and rehabilitation science.
Scientific Awards:
- NIH K23 Award (2018-2023) for integrative health research
Dr. Liu actively mentors graduate students in biomechanics and physical therapy programs. His collaborations span institutions like Duke University Medical Center and Harvard Medical School, with leadership roles in the Military Health Institute and Barshop Institute for Longevity.
