About
Wayne Riggs is a Professor and Graduate Liaison in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Oklahoma. He holds a PhD from the University of North Carolina. His research primarily focuses on epistemology, with significant contributions to virtue epistemology and the study of epistemic luck. From 2012 to 2022, he served as Chair of the OU Philosophy Department, temporarily reducing his research output. Currently, he prioritizes work in social epistemology and the virtue of open-mindedness.
His research interests include theories of epistemic luck, the role of luck in knowledge, and the epistemic virtue of open-mindedness. He has explored how open-mindedness interacts with understanding and emotions, as seen in his lecture Open-mindedness, Understanding and Emotion and his forthcoming book Open-Mindedness (Oxford University Press).
Riggs has published extensively in journals like The Monist, Synthese, Metaphilosophy, and volumes such as the Routledge Handbook on The Philosophy and Psychology of Luck. His work bridges theoretical epistemology and applied virtue epistemology in educational contexts.
