Wayne K. Li

Wayne K. Li is a Teaching Professor at the School of Industrial Design and holds a joint position between the Colleges of Design and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is the James L. Oliver Professor, leading interdisciplinary teaching initiatives and fostering collaboration between mechanical engineering and industrial design through the Innovation and Design Collaborative (IDC) and Design Bloc.

• Education: Master of Science in Engineering from Stanford University; dual undergraduate degrees in Fine Arts in Design and Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin; continuing education in Industrial/Transportation Design from the College for Creative Studies.

Li's research focuses on ethnographic research, multidisciplinary online education, and human-machine interaction in transportation design. He has developed intelligent tutoring systems like Sketchtivity and Persketchtivity to enhance sketching pedagogy, and his work includes laser forming techniques for metal foams and product-service systems for autonomous vehicles.

Recent publications highlight applications of intelligent tutoring systems in design education, 3D laser forming of metal foam structures, and design thinking methodologies. His research bridges engineering design and creative practices to address real-world challenges.

Scientific awards include the James L. Oliver Professorship, recognizing his contributions to interdisciplinary education and research. Li also operates as a principal design consultant through Wayne Li Design, integrating industry and academic expertise since 2010.
