About
Warren Blunt is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biosystems Engineering at the University of Manitoba, part of the Price Faculty of Engineering. He earned his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Biosystems Engineering at the University of Manitoba between 2011 and 2019, focusing on microbial bioprocess development for waste valorization. Prior to his academic role, he worked at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) as an Assistant Research Officer, collaborating with SMEs and organizations to advance Canada’s bio-economy.
His research emphasizes converting agro-industrial wastes into value-added bio-based chemicals via microbial fermentation. Key areas include bioreactor optimization, metabolic engineering, and process monitoring tools. Notable projects involve Burkholderia thailandensis for sugar co-valorization and Pseudomonas putida for polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) synthesis.
Blunt’s publications span bioprocess engineering, microbial metabolism, and material characterization of PHAs. While not currently seeking graduate students, his work bridges chemical engineering, microbiology, and environmental science to address sustainability challenges.
