About
Warner C. Greene, MD, PhD is a distinguished Professor and Director of the Gladstone Center for HIV Cure Research at the Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology (GIVI), part of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He holds the Nick and Sue Hellmann Distinguished Professorship of Translational Medicine and is also a Professor of Medicine, Microbiology, and Immunology at UCSF. His research focuses on HIV pathogenesis, latency, transmission, and global health initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr. Greene completed his MD/PhD at Washington University School of Medicine and trained in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. He has led GIVI since its founding in 1991 and expanded his work through roles at the UCSF-Gladstone Center for AIDS Research and the Accordia Global Health Foundation, which established the Infectious Diseases Institute in Uganda.
His research interests include viral mechanisms of disease, immune system interactions, and translational medicine. Recent studies emphasize SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis, HIV reservoirs, and antiviral strategies. He has authored over 380 papers and holds major awards like the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Institute of Human Virology (2019) and membership in the National Academy of Medicine (2005).
Dr. Greene’s labs investigate HIV latency and viral persistence, with notable contributions to understanding pyroptosis in HIV-infected T cells and SARS-CoV-2’s impact on neurological systems. He has advised global health initiatives, including training African healthcare workers and advancing HIV/AIDS care in Uganda. Current work includes developing latency-reversing agents and vaccines targeting viral reservoirs.
