W. Seth Childers is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh. His research focuses on biomolecular condensates, synthetic biology, and the origins of life. He leads the Childers Lab, which investigates how biomolecular condensates function as compartmentalization strategies in bacteria and their role in mRNA decay, signaling pathways, and antibiotic target discovery. The lab also develops synthetic biology tools and biosensors to study bacterial signaling and gut-brain axis interactions.
Key research areas include phase separation in bacterial systems, design of intelligent nanomaterials, and repurposing peptide assemblies for therapeutic applications. His work bridges interdisciplinary approaches, combining synthetic biology, biophysical chemistry, and microbial genetics. Notable contributions include co-discovering biomolecular condensates in bacteria and developing FRET biosensors to study enzyme activity in vivo.
