W. Craig Fowler

W. Craig Fowler is Professor and Vice-Chair of Surgery at Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine, Clinical Associate Professor at the UNC School of Medicine, and Medical Director Emeritus/Board Chair for Miracles in Sight. He joined Campbell in 2015, previously serving at Duke University Medical Center and UNC.

His educational background includes:

• Phi Beta Kappa graduate from the University of Virginia (1981)
• MD from Medical College of Virginia (1985)
• Chief Residency at George Washington University Medical Center (1989)
• Fellowship in Cornea & External Disease, Refractive Surgery, Ocular Microbiology & Electron Microscopy at Dean McGee Eye Institute (1989-1991)
• Ophthalmic Pathology training at Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (1988)

Dr. Fowler specializes in corneal and anterior segment disorders, with pioneering work in refractive surgery programs and eye banking. His clinical research spans corneal transplantation, tissue preparation, and surgical innovation, notably founding Duke's refractive surgery program and contributing to the Department of Defense's Free Electron Laser Laboratory.

He has received numerous accolades including:

• Best Doctors in America (2000-2016)
• R Townley Paton Awardee (2014) - EBAA's highest global honor for corneal physicians
• Medical Science Award of Excellence for Transplant Tissue Preparation (2011)
• American Medical Association’s Physician Recognition Award (2009-2012)

Dr. Fowler actively mentors medical students through co-hosted retreats at Campbell and UNC with his wife Dr. Amy Fowler (Duke oculoplastic ophthalmologist). He advises surgery clubs, serves on the National Veteran’s Administration Surgical Advisory Board, and contributes to the American Academy of Ophthalmology's committees. His leadership extends to the Triangle Christian Medical Dental Association (Vice Chair for 25+ years) and international medical missions.

Current initiatives focus on advancing eye banking protocols through Miracles in Sight and integrating surgical education with student mentorship programs across both universities.
