Univ.-Prof. Dr. Volker John is a faculty member at the Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) and the Freie Universität Berlin. He leads the Research Group on Numerical Mathematics and Scientific Computing. His academic career includes roles as a professor of Applied Mathematics at Saarland University (2005–2009) and research positions at Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg. John holds a PhD (1997) and Habilitation (2002) in Mathematics.
His research focuses on scientific computing, turbulence modeling, and numerical methods for fluid dynamics and population balance systems. He has supervised numerous PhD and Master’s students, including recent theses on blood flow modeling and deep learning applications in numerical simulations.
