Volker Alt

Professor Volker Alt serves as faculty at the University of Regensburg School of Medicine within the Department of Trauma Surgery at University Hospital Regensburg. His clinical and research activities focus on advancing trauma surgical care through innovative solutions for implant-associated complications and impaired bone healing.

His research portfolio centers on:

• Combatting Staphylococcus aureus infections in orthopedic implants using bacteriophage-loaded polyelectrolyte systems
• Modulating immune responses via TLR9 stimulation (CpG-ODN) to enhance bone infection resolution
• Developing biomaterial-enhanced strategies for fracture healing in systemically diseased bone
• Addressing complications in patients with compromised physiological states

Professor Alt actively secures competitive funding through Germany's Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), currently leading an in-kind grant project on bacteriophage anti-infective coatings while having completed related work on immunomodulation and transregional biomaterial studies. His translational approach bridges surgical practice with cutting-edge biomaterial engineering to solve persistent clinical challenges in trauma surgery.
