Vivien Hamilton is an Associate Professor in the Department of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts at Harvey Mudd College. She also serves as Chair of the intercollegiate Science, Technology and Society (STS) program and Director of the Hixon-Riggs Forum for Responsive Science and Engineering. Her research examines medical technologies like x-rays, electrotherapy devices, and infant incubators, focusing on their sociocultural impacts, interdisciplinary collaborations, and entanglements with race, gender, and environmental justice.
Her edited volume, Inevitably Toxic? Historical Perspectives on Contamination, Exposure, and Expertise (2018), explores toxic landscapes and their intersections with scientific expertise. Hamilton teaches courses on the history of science, technology, and medicine, emphasizing critical engagement with scientific authority and ethical dimensions of innovation.
