Vivian M Abascal, MD, is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Previously, she held positions at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, including Assistant Professor of Medicine and Co-director of the Cardiovascular Women’s Health Clinic at the Gill Heart Institute. She also served as Co-director of the Heart Station and Echocardiography Laboratory at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Kentucky. Dr. Abascal’s clinical focus includes aortic disease, arrhythmia, echocardiography, and heart failure. She is affiliated with Mount Sinai Queens and The Mount Sinai Hospital.
Education: MD from Universidad Central de Venezuela. Clinical and research fellowships in medicine, cardiology, and cardiovascular epidemiology at Harvard Medical School and Boston University Medical School.
Research Interests: Dr. Abascal specializes in women’s heart disease and echocardiography. Her work includes developing an echocardiographic score to predict outcomes of percutaneous balloon valvuloplasty, published in major journals like Circulation and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Her current research focuses on heart failure, cardiac tumors, and novel therapies for non-diabetic heart failure patients.
