Virginia Dignum is Professor at the Department of Computing Science at Umeå University, Sweden where she leads the research group Social and Ethical Artificial Intelligence. She is also associated with the Faculty Technology Policy and Management at the Delft University of Technology.
Professor Dignum's research focuses on the complex interconnections between people, organizations and technology. Her work spans from practical applications and simulations to formal theories integrating agency and organization. Her current research directions include Responsible artificial intelligence, analyzing moral and ethical issues arising from autonomous intelligent agents in teams, formalization of social interaction, and design and evaluation of human-agent teamwork.

She is the Program Chair of AAMAS'24 (the 23nd International Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems) and the Ethics Chair of AAAI'24 (the 38th AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence). Professor Dignum actively speaks on the social and ethical impact of AI at conferences and events worldwide.
