University College LondonAbout
Dr Victoria Redclift is an Associate Professor of Political Sociology in the Social Research Institute at University College London's Institute of Education (UCL IoE), where she joined in 2018 after appointments at the LSE, University of Manchester, and University of Surrey. She serves as Academic Lead for Widening Participation and Careers Liaison in her department while contributing to the BAME Awarding Gap Committee and Liberating the Curriculum Working Group.
Her educational background includes:
- MSc in Social Policy and Development Studies, London School of Economics (awarded Richard Titmuss Prize)
- PhD in Sociology, London School of Economics (Bonnart-Braunthal PhD scholarship)
Victoria's research centers on citizenship and political exclusion through four interconnected lenses: statelessness in postcolonial contexts, intersections of 'race'/class/gender in exclusionary processes, diaspora/transnationalism dynamics, and intra-minority identity with attention to racialized health inequality. Her qualitative work examines how historical displacement shapes contemporary political spaces, particularly among South Asian Muslim communities across the UK and US.
Her recent publications reveal a consistent focus on transnational political spaces among British Bangladeshi communities across multiple UK cities, with growing integration of health inequality perspectives regarding LGBTQ+ ethnic minorities and pandemic impacts. Key themes include Brexit's effect on transnational identities, urban conviviality in diverse settings, and intersectional citizenship experiences.
Her scholarly recognition includes:
- Shortlisted for 2023 Sage Prize in Innovation/Excellence
- University of Surrey Faculty Researcher of the Year Award (2016)
- ESRC Future Research Leaders Award (2016-2019)
- Phillip Leverhulme Prize (2015-2020)
- BSA Phillip Abrams Memorial Book Prize shortlisting (2014)
Victoria has secured substantial research funding including a British Academy/Leverhulme grant (2013-2015) on intra-minority relations, a Phillip Leverhulme project 'From Brick Lane to Little Bangladesh' (2015-2021), and an ESRC grant on 'Transnational Practices in Local Settings' (2016-2020). She currently co-leads a UCL Health of the Public Grant on LGBTQ+ ethnic minority mental health and serves as Co-I on the NIHR-funded CICADA-ME study examining pandemic health disparities.
Her community-engaged approach connects academic work with practical applications through collaborations with the London Bangla Press Club, Community Connect Foundation, and parliamentary roundtables, ensuring research maintains direct relevance for minority communities.
