Victoria Rose Montrose is Assistant Professor of Religion and Asian Studies at Furman University. She holds a Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Cultures from the University of Southern California, M.A. in Buddhist Studies from Graduate Theological Union, and B.A. in Political Science from UC San Diego. Fulbright and Japan Foundation fellowships supported her doctoral research on Japanese Buddhist modernization.
Her research examines modernization processes in Japanese Buddhism, including educational institutionalization, ritual globalization, and new religious movements. Current projects analyze female leadership in Japanese Buddhist organizations and transnational ritual adaptations like Hawaii's Lantern Floating ceremony.

Dr. Montrose serves as President of the Society for the Study of Japanese Religion and steering committee member for the AAR Japanese Religions Unit.
