About
Victor Próspero serves as the 2024-2025 Princeton-Mellon Fellow in Architecture, Urbanism, and the Humanities at Princeton University's School of Architecture, supported by the Mellon Foundation, Princeton University School of Architecture, and the Program in Latin American Studies. An architect and architectural historian, his research critically examines architecture's entanglement with political power structures in twentieth-century Latin America.
His educational trajectory includes a PhD from the University of São Paulo funded by a Fapesp Fellowship and a Fulbright Fellowship at Harvard University's Department of History of Art and Architecture (2021-2022).
Próspero's scholarship centers on epistemologies of modernity, development ideology disputes, and the ambivalences of architectural practice under authoritarian regimes. His current book project "Paulista Architecture and Military Dictatorship" expands his doctoral research on São Paulo's architectural field during Brazil's military dictatorship (1964-1985). He actively bridges academic and public spheres through exhibitions on memory disputes and the built environment, and served as Vice-President of the Brazilian Institute of Architects' São Paulo branch (2023-2024).
His distinguished recognition includes:
- Fulbright Fellowship (2021-2022)
- Fapesp Fellowship
- Princeton-Mellon Fellowship (2024-2025)
Próspero's scholarly work is amplified through public engagement initiatives including co-editing interview collections with architectural historians and co-curating exhibitions that interrogate spatial memory. His Fall 2024 Interdisciplinary Design Studio (ARC 205/URB 205/LAS 225/ENV 205) with Prof. Mario I. Gandelsonas will explore how social forces shape design thinking, demonstrating his commitment to connecting theoretical frameworks with practical design education.
