Victor Asal

Dr. Victor Asal is Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for Policy Research at the University at Albany. He co-directs the Project on Violent Conflict and is affiliated with the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START).

Research Focus: Asal examines violence choices by non-state organizations and political discrimination against marginalized groups. His work analyzes insurgency dynamics, counterterrorism strategies, and how ethnopolitical organizations become targets of state repression. Additional research explores nuclear proliferation impacts and simulation pedagogy.

Publications: Recent articles investigate abortion rights restrictions, counterinsurgency tactics, insurgent violence escalation, and great power crisis prevention. Pedagogical work develops simulation techniques for political science education.
