Van Der Wende Marijk

Marijk van der Wende is a Professor at Utrecht University’s Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance, with a focus on Higher Education Systems. She serves as President of the European Higher Education Society (EAIR) and the Supervisory Board of the Open University of the Netherlands, while maintaining affiliations as a research associate at the University of California Berkeley’s Center for Studies in Higher Education and a member of Academia Europaea.

Her research examines the impact of global trends on higher education systems, including internationalization, policy governance, and open science. Recent work explores EU-China academic collaboration, neo-nationalism, and globalization challenges.

Key article themes include higher education governance (2025), open systems under siege (2024), and Brexit’s impact on UK-Dutch cooperation (2018). She has co-authored studies on dual-use export controls (2022) and liberal arts education (2016).
