About
Valerii Bukhtiyarov is a distinguished Russian chemist serving as Director of the Boreskov Institute of Catalysis (BIC) in Novosibirsk since 2015 and Head of the Surface Science Laboratory since 2001. Concurrently, he holds the "Catalysis and Adsorption" Chair at Novosibirsk State University. Under his leadership, BIC has become the world's largest catalysis research center with over 1200 employees (550 researchers) following its 2019 restructuring into a Federal Scientific Center.
His educational background includes a Dr.Nat.Sci. (1998) and PhD in Catalysis (1989) from BIC, and an M.Sc. in Chemistry (1983) from Novosibirsk State University. Early career highlights include postdoctoral research at Cardiff University, Texas A&M, and the Fritz-Haber-Institute.
Bukhtiyarov's research bridges surface science and heterogeneous catalysis through advanced in-situ characterization techniques and nanoscience approaches. He investigates size/synergistic effects in mono- and bimetallic catalysts for practical reactions like oxidation and vehicle exhaust purification, advancing catalyst design and stability.
His scientific recognition includes the 2019 Russian Federation Government Prize, the 2016 Balandin Prize, and election as Full Member (2016) and Corresponding Member (2008) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
As Principal Investigator, he secured major grants including €614,285 from the Russian Science Foundation (2017-2018) for catalyst deactivation studies and €257,142 from the Ministry of Science (2011-2013) for synchrotron-based nanomaterial analysis. He also served as Vice-president of the European Federation of Catalysis Societies (2013, 2015, 2017).
Bukhtiyarov directs BIC's expansive research ecosystem while leading the Surface Science Laboratory, driving innovation through interdisciplinary collaboration and state-of-the-art facilities like the Siberian Synchrotron Radiation Center.
