About
Valentine Rey is an Associate Professor at Nantes University and a member of the GeM (Institute of Research in Civil and Mechanical Engineering) within the TRU MECNUM research unit. She was recently awarded as a laureate of the 2024 "Étoiles Montantes" program of the Pays de la Loire Region for her project SIRCOF – Robust numerical simulation of frictional contact.
Dr. Rey's research focuses on developing precise and robust numerical methods for solving mechanical contact problems with high friction coefficients. Her work addresses significant challenges in computational mechanics including complex contact surface geometries, computationally expensive iterative determination of contact zones, and instabilities such as sliding/sticking alternation. Her expertise spans multiple application domains from industrial gearboxes and civil engineering structures to biomedical devices and architectured materials produced through additive manufacturing.
Her research has particular relevance to emerging technologies in soft robotics, where traditional rigid metal robots are replaced with more adaptable systems made from silicone, polymers, and rubber. These innovations require precise simulation of complex mechanical behaviors for effective control and operation in biomedical and industrial applications.
As a recipient of the "Étoiles Montantes" award, Dr. Rey has demonstrated exceptional promise in her field and is positioned to compete for major European research funding through ERC Starting or Consolidator Grants in the near future.
