About
Valérie Copié is a Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry at Montana State University (MSU), leading the university's NMR Center. She holds affiliations with the College of Letters & Science, Thermal Biology Institute, Center for Mental Health Research & Recovery, and other research centers. Her research integrates NMR spectroscopy and metabolomics to study cellular metabolism under environmental and pathological stresses, collaborating across disciplines to address topics like immune cell reprogramming, neurodegenerative diseases, and microbial adaptation to extreme environments. She teaches undergraduate and graduate biochemistry courses, emphasizing critical analysis of primary literature, and has developed curricula for MSU's WWAMI medical program. Dr. Copié has received notable awards including the NSF CAREER Award (2000) and Cox Faculty Award (2008).
Education: B.S. in Biochemistry (Univ. of MN, 1983), Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry (MIT, 1990), postdoctoral training in NMR structural biology at UC Berkeley and NIH. Her research lab employs LC-SPE-NMR-MS technology for metabolite discovery and has pioneered studies on Familial Dysautonomia, NAFLD, and arsenic-contaminated soil microbiology. She actively reviews for journals like Journal of Virology, Journal of Neuroscience, and Metabolites, contributing to NMR methodology standards through editorial roles.
Recent work emphasizes metabolomic signatures of immune responses, environmental toxin effects on microbes, and metabolic biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases. Over 150 publications reflect her leadership in interdisciplinary metabolomics research, with translational focus on diagnostic and environmental applications.
