Uwe Bergmann

Uwe Bergmann is the Martin L. Perl Professor in Ultrafast X-ray Science at UW-Madison. His research develops synchrotron and XFEL techniques to investigate water structure, photosynthetic metalloproteins, functional materials, and ancient artifacts. He pioneers X-ray fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy for chemical mapping of fossils and cultural heritage objects, revealing pigment remnants in extinct mammals and hidden texts in historical manuscripts.

Bergmann's group studies nonlinear phenomena using intense X-ray pulses, tracks real-time chemical reactions, and images prehistoric fossils at micron resolution. He has led projects at SSRL, LCLS, and ESRF, uncovering secrets in specimens like Archaeopteryx feathers and Archimedes manuscripts. His work on stimulated X-ray emission advances precision measurements in transition metal complexes.
