Utpal Dutta

Utpal Dutta is Professor and Chair of Civil, Architectural & Environmental Engineering at the University of Detroit Mercy. He teaches Transportation Engineering, Construction Materials, Engineering Economics, and Optimization courses. Dr. Dutta holds a PhD from the University of Oklahoma and is a licensed professional engineer in Michigan.

His research portfolio includes:

• Utilization of waste materials in highway construction
• Transportation safety and traffic control systems
• Sustainable pavement technologies
• Automotive shredder residue applications

Current investigations focus on incorporating recycled materials into asphalt pavement formulations to enhance sustainability.

Dr. Dutta received the Detroit Mercy President's Award for Faculty Excellence in 1994. He directs the Transit Research Materials Lab and has published extensively on transportation planning, materials innovation, and infrastructure optimization. His industry collaborations include partnerships with transportation departments and environmental agencies.
