About
Dr. Uria Alcolombri is a Principle Investigator at the Department of Plant & Environmental Sciences, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, affiliated with the Alexander Silberman Institute of Life Sciences. Their research focuses on microbial ecology and biogeochemistry in marine environments, specifically investigating carbon cycling, sulfur-gas production mechanisms, and plankton adaptation strategies. Alcolombri leads a lab exploring diatom biology, microbial interactions, and the biological pump's role in carbon sequestration.
Research interests include understanding how microorganisms shape ocean ecosystems through enzymatic processes and symbiotic relationships. The lab employs microfluidics, metagenomics, and biochemical approaches to study these phenomena. Dr. Alcolombri holds the 2023 Alon fellowship and mentors a team of postdocs and graduate students.
Current projects involve studying microbial degradation of organic particles, diatom physiology, and the ecophysiological impacts of environmental fluctuations. The lab actively recruits students and researchers interested in marine microbial systems.
