Upkar Singh is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at Newman University, specializing in Secondary Mathematics Education. He transitioned from a 15-year career as a Secondary Mathematics teacher, including roles as Head of Department, to Higher Education. His teaching focuses on preparing trainee teachers for 21st-century pedagogy, emphasizing conceptual understanding and contextualized learning.
- Qualifications: BA/QTS, MSc in Mathematics Education (University of Warwick)
Research interests include conceptual understanding in mathematics education, ethnomathematics, pupil organization strategies, historical manipulatives, and philosophy in mathematics education. He leads the Subject Knowledge Enhancement course at Newman and secured NCTL seed funding for a BSc Mathematics with QTS program. Current projects explore tensions in mathematics teaching across transition stages and the impact of heterogeneous groupings in secondary education.
A member of the ATM and BSRLM, Upkar is pursuing a PhD on mathematics education transitions and relational understanding.
