Dr. Upali Sraman is a Lecturer in Buddhist Languages and Cultures at the School of Divinity, University of Edinburgh. He holds a PhD in Religion from Emory University (2023), an MDiv in Buddhist Ministry from Harvard University (2016), and an MA in Buddhist Studies from the Sri Lanka International Buddhist Academy (2013). His research focuses on Buddhist narratives, ethics, and texts in Pali, Sanskrit, and Tibetan, with an emphasis on modern interpretations of Buddhism and inter-religious dynamics in South Asia. He is fluent in Bengali, English, Pali, Sanskrit, Tibetan, Sinhalese, and Hindi.
Dr. Sraman has taught at institutions including Emory University, Harvard, and Kathmandu University. He has received notable awards such as the ACLS Dissertation Fellowship and the Dean’s Teaching Fellowship. His work spans peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and public-facing writing on topics like Buddhist identity in Bangladesh and cognitive distortions in Theravada texts.
He is a Steering Committee Member of Edinburgh Buddhist Studies and has contributed to academic editing roles, including the Sri Lanka International Journal of Buddhist Studies. His professional affiliations include the American Academy of Religions and the Association of Asian Studies.
