Umut Gürsoy

Prof. Umut Gürsoy was a Professor of Theoretical Physics at the Institute for Theoretical Physics (ITF) within the Faculty of Science at Utrecht University. His research focused on strongly coupled quantum field theories, leveraging the holographic correspondence from String Theory to bridge quantum field theories and Einstein's general relativity. He explored applications in QCD, condensed matter systems, and phenomena like spin currents and anomalous transport in plasmas.

His work also addressed quantum gravity, particularly in lower-dimensional string theories, and sought a microscopic derivation of holographic duality. Tragically, he passed away unexpectedly, leaving a legacy as a respected colleague, mentor, and researcher at the intersection of theoretical physics disciplines.
