Ulrich Schmid

Ulrich Schmid is a Professor of Russian Culture and Society at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland, since 2007. He previously held academic positions at the University of Basel (1992-2003), University of Bern (2003-2004), and Ruhr-University Bochum (2005-2007). He earned his PhD from the University of Basel in 1995, following studies at Zurich, Heidelberg, and Leningrad.

His research focuses on Nationalism in Eastern Europe, Russian public sphere and media theory, and cultural studies of Ukraine and Poland. He has contributed to the Neue Zürcher Zeitung since 1993 and served as Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of St. Gallen from 2010 to 2014.
