About
Prof. Dr. Ulrich S. Schubert is a Full Professor of Organic Chemistry and Macromolecular Chemistry at Friedrich Schiller University Jena, where he also serves as Director of both the Jena Center for Soft Matter (JCSM) and the Center for Energy and Environmental Chemistry Jena (CEEC). With over 1,150 scientific publications, 59,100 citations (Google Scholar 102,160), and an h-index of 108 (Google Scholar 141), Professor Schubert is recognized as one of the world's leading chemists and materials scientists. He has been listed as a "highly cited researcher" since 2014 and holds memberships in prestigious institutions including the Max Planck Society, acatech (National Academy of Science and Engineering/Germany), and the National Academy of Inventors/USA.
Professor Schubert's educational background includes chemistry studies at the University of Frankfurt a.M. (1988-1990) and University of Bayreuth (1990-1993), with a research stay at Virginia Commonwealth University, USA. He completed his doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) jointly at the University of Bayreuth and University of South Florida/USA (1993-1995) under Prof. Newkome, followed by a post-doc at Université Louis Pasteur Strasbourg with Nobel Laureate Prof. Dr. Jean-Marie Lehn (1995-1996), and habilitation in Chemistry at TU Munich (1996-1999).
His research focuses on metallo-supramolecular polymers, tailored functional polymers and nanoparticles, responsive materials, high-throughput experimentation, inkjet printing, and nanolithography. Recent publications demonstrate a strong interdisciplinary approach, with increasing emphasis on biomedical applications of polymers including drug delivery systems, antifungal agents, and diagnostic sensors. His work bridges polymer chemistry, materials science, and nanotechnology with applications spanning energy, environmental science, and biomedicine.
Professor Schubert's scientific achievements have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards:
- Federal Cross of Merit with Ribbon, Federal Republic of Germany (2018)
- University Teacher of the Year, German University Association (2019)
- Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), USA (2017)
- Elected member National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) (2016)
- Fellow (FRSC), Royal Society of Chemistry (2014)
- "Highly cited researcher" status since 2015
- VICI award (EUR 1.5 Mio.) from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (2004)
As an educator and mentor, Professor Schubert has supervised 92 completed doctoral theses (at Jena & Eindhoven), 93 diploma/master theses, and 50 bachelor theses. His research group has produced 12 junior research group leaders and 14 professors. He currently mentors Emmy-Noether-, BMBF- and Carl-Zeiss-supported junior research groups. His research has been supported by significant third-party funding totaling EUR 65 million since 2007, plus EUR 135 million as lead partner in new building projects. Notable funded projects include the DFG Collaborative Research Center 1278 CRC PolyTarget (EUR 10 Mio.), EU ITN "POLYSTORAGE" (EUR 4 Mio.), and the Priority Programme "Polymer-based Batteries" (SPP 2248, EUR 12 Mio.).
Professor Schubert directs the Laboratory of Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry (IOMC), which houses approximately 100 researchers from 12 different countries. He also leads the Jena Center for Soft Matter (JCSM) and the Center for Energy and Environmental Chemistry (CEEC Jena), which includes significant infrastructure investments including new building projects CEEC Jena II and AWZ CEEC Jena (ca. EUR 53 Mio.). His research teams work across multiple interdisciplinary areas including polymer chemistry, nanotechnology, energy storage, and biomedical applications of materials.
