Ulrich Riegel is a full Professor of Practical Theology and Religious Education at the Faculty of Catholic Theology, University of Siegen, where he has been serving since December 2008. He is actively involved in research, teaching, and academic leadership, with a strong focus on religious education and empirical theology.
His research interests include religious and spiritual education, gender in religious contexts, and educational research. He is particularly engaged in the didactics of religious education and teacher training.
Riegel is a member of several prominent academic networks, including the Association of Catholic Religious Educators and Catechists (AKRK), the International Society of Empirical Research in Theology (ISERT), the International Academy of Practical Theology (IAPT), and the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI).
He has held significant leadership roles, including Coordinator of EARLI-SIG 19 'Religious and Spiritual Education' (2013–2017), co-speaker of the AKRK Didactics Section since 2017, and member of the Advisory Board at the Center for Teacher Education and Educational Research, University of Jena (since 2023). Since 2024, he has served on the DFG Review Board 1.21 'Educational Science and Educational Research.'
He supervises a team of research and student assistants, contributing to academic mentorship and research development.
