Ulf Meissner

Ulf Meissner is a distinguished theoretical nuclear physicist affiliated with the University of Bonn, where he holds the Chair in Theoretical Nuclear Physics and leads the Theory Department of the Helmholtz-Institute for Radiation and Nuclear Physics. He has held prominent positions including Director at the Institute for Nuclear Physics at Forschungszentrum Jülich (2003–2013) and Division Leader at the University of Bonn (1996–2002). His research focuses on strong interactions, chiral perturbation theory, and non-perturbative QCD, with significant contributions to nuclear effective field theory and lattice simulations.

Meissner’s work has revolutionized the understanding of nucleon structure and nuclear forces via chiral effective field theory, enabling direct connections to Quantum Chromodynamics. He pioneered the three-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and unitarized effective field theory frameworks. His leadership roles include coordinating the FP6 'Hadron Physics Theory' network (19 institutions, 78 scientists) and directing the FP7 'QCDnet' network (27 organizations, 100+ scientists).
