About
Dr. Ulf Mallast is a researcher at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ, affiliated with the Monitoring and Exploration Technologies department. Since 2024, he has led key work packages in EU Horizon Europe and H2020 projects like eLTER EnRich and eLTER PLUS, focusing on transnational access and service portfolio development for environmental research infrastructures.
- PhD in Remote Sensing (2013, University of Leipzig)
- Diploma in Geography (2008, University of Leipzig)
His research integrates remote sensing and UAVs to upscale in-situ data (e.g., greenhouse gas emissions, soil moisture) and investigate submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). He combines satellite- and UAV-based sea surface temperature (SST) analyses with hydrochemical data (222Rn, 18O, 2H) to detect SGD dynamics. This work spans marine and terrestrial environments, emphasizing standardized UAV deployment for monitoring.
Recent publications highlight his focus on groundwater-surface water interactions, environmental monitoring, and hydrochemical analysis. Notable projects include the EU-funded e-shape (2019-2023) and eLTER PLUS (2022-2024), where he co-led initiatives on SGD and transnational access. His work also extends to global collaborations like the Deserve Project in the Dead Sea basin (2016).
Dr. Mallast’s methodological expertise includes multi-sensor remote sensing, thermal infrared measurements, and geospatial data integration. He has contributed to understanding nutrient fluxes in large rivers (Elbe) during droughts and pioneered cloud-based platforms for UAV data analysis (Drone4Tree).
