Ulf Brunnbauer is a Professor of Southeast and Eastern European History at the University of Regensburg and Academic Director of the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS), a position he has held full-time since 2017. He also serves as spokesperson for the Leibniz ScienceCampus 'Europe and America in the Modern World' and the Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies, and is a board member of the Center for International and Transnational Area Studies (CITAS) at Regensburg.
- Research Focus: Social history and historical anthropology of Southeast Europe since the 19th century, with emphasis on migration, labor, environmental history, family structures, nation-building, and transnational dimensions of Balkan history.
- Key Publications: Monographs on socialist Bulgaria's social policy, historical anthropology of Rhodope communities, and edited volumes on migration, historiography, and EU integration.
