Udo Buttinger

Udo Buttinger is a Research Assistant at the Institute of Soil Bioengineering and Landscape Construction within the Department of Landscape, Water and Infrastructure at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU). His work focuses on green infrastructure research with applications in urban planning and climate adaptation strategies.

Buttinger completed his Bachelor's degree in landscape architecture at the University of Applied Sciences Weihenstephan-Triesdorf, Germany (2010-2015), followed by a Master's degree at BOKU (2018-2024). Prior to his academic pursuits, he gained professional experience at landscape planning firms in both Germany and Austria.

His research interests span landscape conservation, landscape architecture, building-integrated vegetation, and vegetation technology, with particular emphasis on the integration of green infrastructure into urban environments to address climate challenges. Buttinger's work bridges theoretical research with practical implementation of vegetation technologies in built environments.

His primary publication, the 2024 Master's thesis on photosynthetic activities in Vienna's green infrastructure, represents his contribution to understanding how urban green spaces function ecologically. This work aligns with his involvement in multiple research projects examining water demand, moss-based facade technologies, and evaluation procedures for green infrastructure.

Buttinger actively participates in research projects related to green infrastructure, including studies on water demand of blue-green infrastructure, development of moss-based bio-tech-filter facade technology, and measurement of greened and non-greened objects for evaluation procedures. His collaborative work demonstrates strong engagement with interdisciplinary research teams focused on sustainable urban development.

He has co-authored publications on making building greening measurable and has presented at academic events including the Lange Nacht Der Forschung 2024 with a talk on adapting existing buildings to climate change through green infrastructure, highlighting his commitment to knowledge transfer and practical application of research findings.
