About
Turhan Canli is an Associate Professor of Integrative Neuroscience at Stony Brook University, with affiliations to the Department of Psychology, the Graduate Program in Genetics, and the NSF-funded SCAN (Social, Cognitive, and Affective Neuroscience) Center. He combines expertise in psychology, neuroscience, and molecular biology to investigate gene-environment interactions in social stress reactivity, personality traits, and emotional behavior.
- Education: Ph.D. in Psychobiology from Yale University (1993); postdoctoral training in behavioral, cognitive, and affective neuroscience at Yale and Stanford; molecular biology certification from Smith College (2002); and sabbatical training at Stony Brook's Genomics Core Facility (2008).
His research integrates molecular genetics with behavioral studies to uncover mechanisms regulating gene expression in relation to individual differences in social and emotional functioning. Recent work focuses on the implications of gene-environment interactions for understanding human traits and stress responses.
Canli founded the SCAN Center, a dedicated human research MRI facility at Stony Brook, and directs the Graduate Program in Genetics, coordinating training across 100 laboratories at Stony Brook, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and Brookhaven National Laboratory. He has held advisory roles for the National Institute on Aging and co-founded the international Neuroethics Society, addressing ethical implications of neuroscience applications.
