Tulio Halperín Donghi

Tulio Halperín Donghi was the Muriel McKevitt Sonne Professor of History, Emeritus at UC Berkeley, joining the university in 1971 and retiring in 1994. A revered historian of Latin America, he specialized in Argentine history from the late colonial period through the Peronist era.

He received his doctorate in History from the National University of Buenos Aires in 1955 after studying under Fernand Braudel in Paris. His work spans intellectual, political, economic, and social history, with a focus on nation-building challenges in Latin America. He was an early critic of dependency theory and emphasized the complexity of historical processes.
