About
Trygve Beyer Broch is a Professor at the Department of Public Health and Sport Sciences, part of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences at the University of Inland Norway. His academic work bridges cultural sociology, anthropology, and emotion-oriented social theory to explore intersections of gender, body politics, and (in)equality in sports contexts ranging from elite to youth levels.
His research methodology integrates media analysis and ethnographic fieldwork to examine how societal meanings manifest in sports interactions. Broch is affiliated with Yale University's Center for Cultural Sociology and contributes to its Civil Sphere Working Group. Previously serving on the editorial board of Gender & Society and guest-editing a special issue in American Journal of Cultural Sociology (2022), his scholarly output includes two monographs: A performative feel for the game (2020) exploring sports through performance theory, and The Ponytail: Icon, movement and the modern (sports)woman (2023) analyzing bodily symbols in gendered public culture.
Current research investigates how sports codes, cultural myths, and regulations generate cohesion or conflict in hierarchical youth sports environments. His publications reveal trends in digital/analog attention dynamics, raced/gendered media representations, and narratives of athletic identity through comparative international collaborations.
