California State University, FullertonAbout
Trevis Matheus is Associate Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Geography & the Environment at California State University, Fullerton. He earned a BS in Applied Meteorology from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, followed by an MS and PhD in Geography from Indiana University Bloomington. In 2022 he received the College of Humanities and Social Sciences Award for Outstanding Untenured Faculty Member.
Research Interests:
- Climate extremes and drought reconstruction using tree-ring data
- North American Monsoon variability and atmospheric dynamics
- Dendrochronology and wood anatomy for high-resolution climate proxies
- Integration of multi-species datasets to enhance spatial climate reconstructions
Across more than a decade of publications, Dr. Matheus has focused on refining dendroclimatic techniques—from sub-annual ring-width measurements to blue-intensity analysis—while reconstructing temperature and drought histories across the western and central United States. His work spans from California’s Sierra Nevada to Indiana’s deciduous forests, and from the Southern Rocky Mountains to archaeological structures.
Scientific Awards:
- 2022 College of Humanities and Social Sciences Award for Outstanding Untenured Faculty Member – California State University, Fullerton
Teaching & Mentoring:
- Undergraduate courses: Introduction to the Natural Environment, Weather and Climate, Global Change, Meteorology, Mountain Field Geography, Independent Study
- Graduate seminar: Seminar in Physical Geography
- Faculty mentor in the cAL-DENDRO Tree-Ring Laboratory
Dr. Matheus directs the cAL-DENDRO Tree-Ring Lab at CSUF, where ongoing projects continue to expand North American dendroclimatic networks and refine methodologies for seasonal to multi-century climate reconstructions.
