Travis Kowalski is Professor and Department Head of Mathematics at South Dakota Mines. Originally an art student, he transitioned to mathematics while maintaining artistic approaches to mathematical expression. His research spans complex analysis, formal power series, and mathematics pedagogy.
Research interests include solving differential equations through infinite polynomials and developing abilities-based assessment methods. Received prestigious awards including the Mathematical Association of America's George Pólya Award and Chauvenet Prize.
Teaching covers diverse courses from College Algebra to Game Theory, recognized with institutional and national teaching excellence awards. Mathematical artwork appears in daily 'constrained art' creations.
