About
Tracy Larson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Virginia's College of Arts & Sciences. Her research explores how cellular, organismal, and ancestral environments shape neurodegeneration and regeneration patterns in adult vertebrate brains, with a focus on seasonal plasticity in songbirds. She employs behavioral genomics, molecular biology, and single-nuclei RNA sequencing to study neural plasticity in changing ecosystems.
She teaches Hormones and Behavior (BIOL4080) and Professional Skills in Biological Sciences II (BIOL8250), emphasizing mentorship networks and science communication. Her lab collaborates on the Allen Discovery Center for Neurobiology in Changing Environments with a $10M grant, and she leads community initiatives for inclusivity in biological sciences.
Tracy’s recent publications focus on astrocytic turnover, microglial roles in neurogenesis, and environmental impacts on neural circuits. Her work bridges regenerative medicine, behavioral ecology, and climate change neuroscience, aiming to uncover mechanisms for treating neurological disorders. She received the UVA Research Achievement Award and mentors graduate students like EXPAND Fellow Kenzie Yates.
She contributes to departmental diversity through the DEI Committee, Community Committee, and Outreach programs. Her lab partners with K-12 schools and supports underrepresented students via the Mentoring Institute. Current projects include the 2025 Neurobiology in Changing Environments Symposium and annual Biological Sciences Research Symposiums.
