Toshiko Terazono is a Lecturer in Architecture at the University of Plymouth, affiliated with the School of Art, Design and Architecture within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business. Her academic work integrates architectural design with corporeal engagement in materiality, informed by her PhD research initiated in 2021. She leads the BA (Hons) Architecture Year 1 program, oversees the Year 1 Design Studio and Technology module, and emphasizes sustainable design through hands-on, collaborative projects.
Her teaching philosophy prioritizes craft, material exploration, and community collaboration. Notable projects include co-design initiatives with BA Early Childhood Learning students and local schools, resulting in outdoor learning centers. She has also organized design summer schools in Japan (2013) and the UK (2015), further highlighting her commitment to experiential learning.
Award recognition includes a shortlist in the 2020 RIBA MacEwan Awards for her work. Her research and teaching bridge practice and pedagogy, focusing on materiality's role in sustainable architectural practices.
