Tony Whyton is Professor of Jazz Studies at Birmingham City University. His research focuses on jazz historiography, cultural politics of jazz collectives, and transnational jazz studies. He has authored influential books including Jazz Icons: Heroes, Myths and the Jazz Tradition (2010) and Beyond A Love Supreme: John Coltrane and the Legacy of an Album (2013). He co-edits the Jazz Research Journal and founded the Routledge 'Transnational Studies in Jazz' series.
As Project Leader, he spearheaded the HERA-funded Rhythm Changes project (2010-2013) and currently leads the Cultural Heritage and Improvised Music in European Festivals project. His work bridges musicology with cultural studies, emphasizing interdisciplinary methods.
