Professor Tony Perkins is the Foundation Dean of Health at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) since October 2022. Previously, he served as Head of Medical Sciences (2008-2012) and Dean Academic (2012-2018) at Griffith University. He holds a PhD from the United Medical and Dental Schools (University of London) and completed postdoctoral studies at the Nuffield Department of Obstetrics, University of Oxford. His research focuses on placental biology, particularly mitochondrial dysfunction in pregnancy complications like fetal growth restriction and preeclampsia.
Education: PhD (London), M.Phil (Griffith), B.Sc (Griffith). He has published over 130 papers, secured $5M+ in research funding, and maintains a H-index of 39. He is Australasian Editor for Placenta and on the editorial board of Nutrients.
Research grants include projects on micronutrient interventions for gestational disorders ($1.1M NHMRC grant), metabolomics for pregnancy risk assessment ($39K Norman Beischer Foundation), and placental health clinic development ($92K Gold Coast Hospital Foundation). He holds memberships in the International Federation of Placental Research Associations and Australian Society for Reproductive Biology.
