Tony Chen is Reader (Associate Professor) in High Voltage Engineering and Associate Dean for Research Impact in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Manchester. He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Cardiff University (2015) and B.Eng. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Cardiff University (2012).
His research focuses on environmentally friendlier retrofill replacements for SF6 in power systems, insulation reliability of dynamic cables for floating offshore wind, and high voltage systems for transportation. Current projects include developing SF6 alternatives for power industry applications and offshore wind energy transmission systems. He is Regular Member of CIGRE UK Study Committee B3 (Substations and Electrical Installations).
Awards include being named Best Innovation in Net Zero for collaborative work between University of Manchester and National Grid (2022) and Bhattacharyya Award Finalist (2022).
