Toni Shapiro-Phim is an Associate Professor of Creativity, the Arts, and Social Transformation (CAST) at Brandeis University. She also serves as Co-Director of the Center's Program in Peacebuilding and the Arts and Chair of the CAST program. Her academic background includes a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from Cornell University, an M.A. from Cornell, and a B.A. from Oberlin College.
Her research focuses on the cultural contexts of the arts in regions such as Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, particularly in relation to violence, genocide, migration, refugees, and gender issues. She has conducted extensive ethnographic research in Cambodia and worked in refugee camps in Indonesia and Thailand. Her teaching and research appointments include positions at the University of California-Berkeley, Yale University, and Bryn Mawr College.
