Tom Sorell is Professor of Politics and Philosophy at the University of Warwick, leading the Interdisciplinary Ethics Research Group. He holds roles in the Biometrics and Forensics Scientific Advisory Committee, West Midlands Police ethics committees, and MOD AI Expert Group. Previously, he served as John Ferguson Professor of Global Ethics at the University of Birmingham and held visiting positions at Harvard and Chinese University of Hong Kong.
His research focuses on ethics of surveillance, AI, cybersecurity, and political philosophy. Recent work addresses vaccine hesitancy, deepfake misinformation, and digital pathology ethics. He has authored/co-authored over 140 publications, including books on Hobbes, microfinance ethics, and scientism.
Key awards include RCUK Global Uncertainties Fellowship (2013-2016) and Tang Chun-I Visiting Professorship (2013). His advisory roles span NHS data ethics, police technology oversight, and cybersecurity policy.
