About
Dr. Tom Sleutels is an academic researcher at the University of Groningen (RUG), affiliated with the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Engineering and Technology Institute Groningen. He holds a PhD in Environmental Technology and an MSc in Bioprocess Engineering from Wageningen University. His work focuses on (bio)electrochemistry, bioprocess technology, and environmental engineering, particularly in recovering energy and resources using microorganisms and renewable electricity. He splits his time between the University of Groningen and Wetsus, the European Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Water Technology, where he serves as a scientific project manager.
His research integrates fundamental science with industrial collaboration, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to address environmental challenges. Key areas include microbial electrochemical technologies, biofilm dynamics, and electrochemical nutrient recovery. He has coordinated European project proposals and contributed to pilot-scale studies in water treatment and resource recovery.
Publications highlight innovations in bioelectrochemical systems, fouling mitigation in reverse electrodialysis, and microbial mechanisms for extracellular electron transfer. His work bridges laboratory research with real-world applications, aiming for sustainable solutions in wastewater treatment and renewable energy production.
Tom Sleutels actively engages in teaching and mentoring, fostering collaboration across academic and industrial sectors. He has authored over 80 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, demonstrating a strong commitment to advancing both theoretical and applied research in environmental biotechnology and electrochemistry.
