About
Dr. Tom Pering is a Senior Lecturer in Volcanology at the University of Sheffield's School of Geography and Planning. He joined the institution as a Teaching Associate in 2016 and completed his PhD at Sheffield in 2015 with a thesis titled 'Bubbles in Basalts: Measuring and Modelling Basaltic Degassing.'
- BSc in Physical Geography (University of Reading, 2010)
- MSc in Volcanology and Geological Hazards (Lancaster University)
- PhD in Volcanology (University of Sheffield, 2015)
His research focuses on volcanic gas measurement using ultraviolet cameras and computational fluid dynamics, with an emphasis on low-cost solutions like Raspberry Pi platforms. He has developed innovative tools for SO2 monitoring and lava lake temperature analysis.
Recent publications highlight trends in volcanic degassing mechanisms (passive, Strombolian, lava fountaining) and low-cost environmental sensing. Collaborations span institutions in the UK, Italy, and Guatemala, with fieldwork at volcanoes like Yasur (Vanuatu), Masaya (Nicaragua), and Bagana (Papua New Guinea).
