Tom Michael Fenchel is a Full Professor of Marine Biology at the University of Copenhagen's Marine Biological Laboratory in Helsingør, Denmark, where he has served since 1987. Previously, he held professorships at Aarhus University (1970-1987) and associate/assistant positions at Copenhagen (1965-1970). He earned his PhD (1964) and D.Sc (1969) in Zoology from the University of Copenhagen.
His research spans microbial ecology, evolutionary biology, marine biology, protozoology, and population ecology, including the formulation of Fenchel's Law. He has supervised approximately 40 MSc and PhD students and taught courses internationally at institutions including Woods Hole Marine Laboratory and University of Vienna.
Professor Fenchel has received significant recognition including:
- Ecology Institute Prize (1986)
- Huntsmann Medal for Oceanography (1986)
- ASLO Lifetime Achievement Award (2006)
- John H. Martin Award (2006)
He holds leadership experience as former department chair at Aarhus University and Copenhagen's Marine Biological Laboratory, served on editorial boards of 10+ scientific journals including Science and Marine Biology, and participates in numerous academies worldwide.
