About
Dr. Tom Hazell is Professor and Graduate Coordinator in Kinesiology and Physical Education at Wilfrid Laurier University. He directs the Energy Metabolism Research Laboratory (EMRL), studying energy balance, appetite regulation, and exercise metabolism with NSERC and CFI funding.
His research examines:
- Appetite hormone responses to high-intensity exercise
- Metabolic effects of HIIT and sprint training
- Menstrual cycle impacts on exercise physiology
- Lactate's role in appetite regulation
Dr. Hazell investigates how exercise intensity affects post-exercise metabolism, energy expenditure, and body composition. His work has demonstrated that high-intensity exercise induces greater lactate accumulation and appetite suppression compared to moderate exercise. Current projects analyze sex-specific responses to exercise across lifespan stages, including menopause-related metabolic changes.
